Women’s Cancer Information
Why does Sister Webs commit itself to women’s cancer causes??  Simple.  We do it for every man, woman and child who has lost a wife, mother, daughter or friend to breast, ovarian, and other female cancers.  Statistically, that’s almost 100% of Americans.  My sister and cousin are breast cancer survivors, and I have two sons and a 15-year-old daughter whom I hope will never have to experience this disease firsthand or lose someone they love to it.
The American Cancer Society estimates that 291,000 new cases of breast and reproductive cancers were diagnosed in American women in 2010 alone.  And an estimated 68,000 women died from them that year.  They affect women of all ages, races, religions, and income levels. Even men are not immune with an estimated 1,970 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in men in the U.S. in 2010.  See here for full report.

Why Not Komen?
Until recently, we were a supporter of the well-known Komen organization. However, upon further research we felt that Komen:
1.
Does not spend enough of their available funds on research to finding a cure, their stated mission. In FY 2010, they spent about 19% of their total revenue on research, and this figure has been in decline since 2008. Seems to us that if a charity's mission is to CURE a disease, then research should be it's #1 spending priority.
2.
Has aggressively sued small, mom & pop charities, that often donate close to 100% of their proceeds, for using the “for the cure” label, forcing them to either capitulate or spend thousands of dollars in legal fees to battle them in court.  This just doesn’t feel right to us.  Shame on them.

Who Do We Support?
Critters for the Cure is a 501(c)3 charity that leverages the power of pets and the people who love them to promote survivor wellness and resources to women being treated for breast or any GYN-related cancer. They provide financial support for things like wigs and prosthetics, medical bills and co-payments, transportation to treatment, rent, phone bills, and even dog walkers. They help patients assess their medical and financial options and direct them to available resources. They also help women re-enter the workforce after completing treatments by helping rewrite resumes and interview preparation.
Please visit their web site and consider making a donation to their worthy endeavours. Approximately 90% of funds they raise are spent on their primary mission.
